Dr. Jessica Aquino presented her and her coworker's research at Þjóðarspegillinn - the 20th annual Conference in Social Sciences held in the University of Iceland in Reykjavík. The aim of the conference is to introduce and share interesting research material from within the social sciences in Iceland.
Dr. Jexxica Aquino, assistant professor at Hólar University, led a session on Community Based Initiatives and Rural Development. The session had presentations on community based initiatives and their impact on rural development.
Dr. Aquino presented on research with her co-author Laufey Haraldsdóttir, "A Conceptual Model of Community-Based Initiatives and Rural Development: Two Case Studies of Engagement and Empowerment in Guatemala and Iceland." This presentation was on building a conceptual model of the process of community-based initiatives and how they both engage and empower rural communities in sustainable community development using two case studies.
Dr. Aquino presented on research with her co-author Gudrun M. H. Kloes, "Neolocalism, Revitalization, and Rural Tourism Development in Húnaþing vestra.”"This presentation takes an ethnographic approach to the study of neolocalism to describe how the community of Húnaþing vestra saw the potential to nurture a sense of place using their natural and cultural assets to enhance the local economy and community livelihoods.
